Goodna Skate Park opens with great interest from young locals

Goodna's long-awaited skate park has been officially opened with over a hundred enthusiasts using the facility with a variety of skateboards, scooters and bikes.

The opening had been delayed because of the floods which hit Ipswich in mid-May. The $180,000 development at Leslie Park opposite the Goodna Railway Station was a joint initiative of the Ipswich City Council and the State Government.

Parents and young children were at the official weekend opening performed by Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale and Goodna Councillor Paul Tully who cut a red ribbon to commemorate the event.
Cr Tully said the skate park was the result of the hard work and persistence of the skateboard enthusiasts around Goodna who had lobbied for an up-market facility.

"This skate park has modern facilities including a BBQ, toilets and a 24-hour shop just across the road for food and refreshments."

Cr Tully said the skate park was located in the heart of Goodna and was easily accessible by train or on foot or bike and was only 200 metres from the suburb of Gailes.

He called on the users to be proud of their park and keep it clean and free of vandalism and graffiti," Cr Tully said.

Challenging each other to a skateboard duel, the two councillors struggled to keep their balance.

"If politics is a balancing act, riding a skateboard is ten times harder," Cr Tully declared.
