I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts: Tropical fruits endure the winter cold of Goodna

It's hard to imagine a thriving coconut tree in downtown Goodna  - one of Queensland's coldest suburbs in winter.

Goodna's temperatures are very similar to those at Amberley with the lowest minimum June temperature on record being -4.3 degrees on 25 June 1985.

But somehow, with the first day of winter now upon us, there is a mature coconut tree in the heart of Goodna thriving with a lovely bunch of coconuts.

It's estimated the coconut tree could be up to 50 years old.

Not far away, local Councillor Paul Tully has produced a mature pineapple specimen from a discarded pineapple top he tossed into his home garden three years ago.

The pineapple has weathered the 35 degree summer heat and now Ipswich's winter cold but it has still grown to a decent size.

Cr Tully said: "The lower parts of Goodna have temperatures similar to those at Amberley and it is amazing healthy coconut and pineapple specimens can grow so far south."

"I have seen sugar cane in many gardens around Goodna as well, so our topsy-turvy climate seems to accommodate everything from North Queensland.

"Tropical Queensland is alive and well in downtown Goodna.

"Goodna is developing as the tropical paradise of Brisbane's western corridor," Cr Tully quipped.
