Work begins on Ipswich Motorway upgrade

Within an hour of Kevin Rudd's new Labor Government being sworn in, contractors moved on site at Redbank to commence exploratory drilling for the promised Ipswich Motorway upgrade.

After more than a decade of bickering and with the new Prime Minister abandoning the Liberals' proposed Goodna Bypass, a drilling rig has commenced sinking five holes at Chalk Street near Goodna Creek to assess the foundations required for the motorway upgrade.

The Ipswich Motorway will be 6-laned from Goodna to Dinmore as part of a $1.1 billion upgrade of the notorious 6km stretch of highway.

Preliminary testing work commences adjacent to the
Ipswich Motorway at Redbank.

In addition to the six lanes, there will be parallel access roads and slip lanes as well as on and off ramps between Dinmore and Goodna.

Local Ipswich Councillor Paul Tully described the start of the drilling as an "historic occasion for 100,000 motorists who use the Ipswich Motorway every day".

Cr Tully has been campaigning since 1985 for a full upgrade of the Ipswich Motorway.
