Christmas surprise for Goodna battler

Fifty-three year old Goodna battler Julius Fazekas received the Christmas gift of a lifetime with the surprise presentation of a motorised scooter by Ipswich Councillor Paul Tully, Goodna Rotary represented by John Nugent the former Mayor of Ipswich and Bruce Saville and Yvonne Saville from Ipswich-based "Walk on Wheels".

Mr Fazekas came from Hungary to Australia in 1982 to embark on a new life.

He was a fit and healthy 27 year old who planned a new life in Australia far away from the rigours of Communist Hungary.

But tragedy struck four years later after he suffered a major stroke following a serious car accident.

Mr Fazekas was paralysed in one arm and his mobility severely affected.

Cr Paul Tully said Julius was well-known around Goodna and the motorised scooter would help him enormously.

“He has no relatives in Australia and this will give him a major boost as he gets around the suburb for his shopping and personal needs.

“Julius had saved $1300 from a recent Gold Lotto win to buy a scooter but he will get to keep that, as well as his new motorised scooter.”

When the scooter arrived at his Smiths Road home, Julius' face lit up like a Christmas tree.

"
Tremendous - I was only dreaming about it," Julius exclaimed as he jumped on board his new scooter and regained the freedom he lost 21 years ago.
