Goodna Eagles back on the field

Flood-affected Goodna rugby league players will be among
those returning to the footy field in IRL trials on Saturday.

HAVING experienced a torrid pre-season, Goodna and District Rugby League Football Club president Gary Parker is thrilled to welcome some on-field action this weekend.

Although Goodna's home base is still being repaired from massive flood damage, Parker has cause for optimism.

The Goodna Eagles are hopeful of being able to play at their home ground in early March.

Saturday will also provide a boost for the club with the Eagles tackling a Gold Coast Titans under-20 side in a trial at Bob Gibbs Oval, Springfield.

In one of a number of Ipswich Rugby League (IRL) trials, Goodna can put the recent dramas behind them to step up preparations for the new season.

"It's not easy," Parker said, having faced the flood disaster and having to move club training to Redbank.

"We've had to carry everything around in the back of the ute, all our gear and that sort of stuff.

"There's nothing like training at home."

However, Parker said support from Ipswich City Council, club supporters and a recent financial package from Bank of Queensland was making a positive difference.

"The ground is starting to look pretty good. It should be back for the first week of March," he said.

"We could do with a little bit more help with general cleaning up around the club. We desperately need a painter.

"We'll get there."

Anyone able to help Goodna rugby league can contact Parker on 0428 777958.

Parker said Saturday night's trial would give his players a chance to focus on the fast-approaching IRL season.

"We've had a core of 20, 25 at training in the pre-season," Parker said.

"We've got about 45 signed.

"I don't think we'll be a real threat this year but we'll be there somewhere."

Meanwhile, other clubs involved in official IRL trials are Norths, Brothers, Swifts, Lowood and Springfield.

Clubs will field teams at venues around south east Queensland.

Like Goodna, Norths Rugby League was severely affected by last month's floods.

Norths will take an A-Grade team to Gatton on Saturday.

The Tigers are using Saturday's trial to have a look at the large number of new recruits they have brought in for the 2011 season.

Grand finalists Brothers are hosting Brisbane 2nd Division club Easts in all three grades on Saturday afternoon and night at Brother Seery Field, Raceview.

Much hype has surrounded Brothers in the off-season.

Many of the new players will be eager to impress to gain selection for round 1 of the regular season.

Last year's premiers Swifts will kick off their title defence with trials against Souths Logan FOGS Cup and Inala's Brisbane 2nd Division team at Llewellyn Field, Purga, on Saturday.

This will be new coach Alby Talipeau's first hit-out after taking over from Wayne Finch in the off-season.
