Tragedy averted as runaway pontoon caught at Goodna

A 3-tonne runaway pontoon from the heart of Ipswich was captured on the Brisbane River at Goodna this afternoon in a dramatic rescue operation.

It had posed a serious danger to jetties and moorings from Jindalee to St Lucia to West End had it not been retrieved at the Goodna Boat Ramp.

The pontoon had broken its moorings at Cribb Park on the Bremer River in Ipswich.

A crane removed the pontoon in a delicate operation this afternoon.
Goodna Councillor Paul Tully inspected the operation saying it was "almost impossible to get the pontoon out of the fast-flowing Brisbane River".

The crane is still on site removing the second half of the pontoon.
