Redbank Plains High teacher is a winner

Michael Winton has been recognised for his efforts.

Redbank Plains State High School teacher aide Michael Winton has been awarded the Bremer TAFE's prestigious 2009 RA Wearne Memorial Student Award for Excellence in Learning.

Mr Winton received the award at the institute's graduation ceremony on March 17 after completing a Certificate IV in Mental Health Work and Diplomas in Youth Work and Community Welfare Work.

Mr Winton said his new qualifications would enhance his role at Redbank Plains State High School's Inclusive Learning Centre.

``My wife and I were foster carers for more than 20 years working with adolescents with disabilities and now I have a great passion for working with youth especially those with disabilities," he said.

``My aim was to learn how to identify the risk factors, vulnerabilities and circumstances that put some children and young people at increased risk of suicide and other health and mental issues.''

Mr Winton said his new skills would enable him to take on projects with confidence.

``I firmly believe you are never too old to learn,'' he said.

``Effective time management skills have been one of my greatest challenges but I have proved to myself that balancing two jobs, study and family life is possible.''

The Bremer TAFE is Queensland's leading institute for Community Services (General) and Disability Service training.
